  22. DISEASES AS A REFLECTION OF THE PSYCHE

  26.     Wanting to know whether or not the human brain has
  27. the power to cure the body of illness, I set out to
  28. find an article with some cold hard facts.  This
  29. article, written by Marcia Angell, Ph.D., elaborates on
  30. the subject of the connection between mental state and
  31. disease.
  32.     The belief that there is a connection between
  33. mental and physical health is apparent in the article. 
  34. It signifies that if a person is in a positive frame of
  35. mind, active and content, then they are physically
  36. healthy and have the ability to ward off many
  37. illnesses.  However, in the event the person is in a
  38. deep state of depression, inactive, or despondent, then
  39. their body reacts in a way as to give up and allows
  40. sickness to invade their immune system.  The ability to
  41. control onesÆ physical status is possible, however only
  42. to a certain extent.  One has to be realistic and not
  43. assume that the mind can cure a terminal illness or one
  44. of congenital defect, or can it?  These beliefs
  45. coincide with the philosophies of monism, the mind and
  46. body working as one, and the Grand Unification Theory,
  47. the joining together of mind and body in an organ
  48. called the brain.  I personally believe the mind can
  49. influence onesÆ body.  My opinion stems from my
  50. discipline acquired in the martial arts.  I can employ
  51. the use of my mind to block out or ignore moderate
  52. amounts of pain.  Therefore I believe the mind has some
  53. definite control over the body and its functions as a
  54. healer.  I therefore agree with Marcia Angel in
  55. believing that positive thoughts and concentration will
  56. result in a healthy body, while negative thoughts will
  57. elicit detrimental effects.  There is a vast amount of
  58. the brain that has been explored, yet much of its
  59. functioning and abilities still remain a mystery.  It
  60. has been said that secrets to the universe and powers
  61. beyond our comprehension are hidden in certain regions
  62. of the brain.  Perhaps it is in these mysterious
  63. regions that those secrets lie.  
  64.     The practice of healing with the mind could be
  65. implemented in medical facilities around the world,
  66. leading to alternative fields of medical interventions
  67. for treating various illnesses.  Mind/Body medicine
  68. exists worldwide.  On October 26, 1993, Turner
  69. Broadcast System will air ôThe Heart of Healing.ö  this
  70. show depicts various individuals whom have reportedly
  71. cured themselves with the power of the mind.  Viewing
  72. this documentary could be beneficial to everyone,
  73. especially individuals with a sense of hopelessness and
  74. helplessness.  
  75.     This article and subject may be interesting to
  76. individuals in health related fields by lowering the
  77. cost of treatment and reducing the demand for
  78. pharmaceuticals to cope with pain and symptoms
  79. associated with simple illnesses.  With proper
  80. education this can be proven to also aid people whose
  81. religions prohibit the use of our medical technology. 
  82. And if accepted, they could use the mind to cure
  83. sicknesses and or reduce the needless suffering of
  84. minor pain.

  93. Sabatino.  It discusses how some of the ancient
  94. practices are coming back into circulation in the
  95. medical field.  Techniques such as acupuncture,
  96. acupressure, yoga, and meditation are complimentary
  97. examples of these practices.  Interest in these
  98. techniques have been aroused partly because of the need
  99. to restore the human need for alternative treatment
  100. along with modern medicine.  Local hospitals utilize
  101. counseling staff along with medical personnel in
  102. treating illnesses such as chronic abdominal pain,
  103. nausea, vomiting, and chronic headaches by teaching
  104. patients relaxation and stress management techniques in
  105. order to enhance the healing process.  Patients who
  106. have been treated solely by use of pharmaceutical means
  107. with little relief of symptoms tend to respond
  108. positively when taught alternative psychological
  109. methods for coping with pain and gaining mental and
  110. physical wellness. 
  111.     In closing, if mind over body medicine was working
  112. before had the technology that is available today, then
  113. how are we to know that the answers to todays problems
  114. are not hidden in the past?
